As I put the finishing touches on my latest work, I can’t help but reflect on the journey
I think about how the Lord has worked in my life over the past year. Through both joyful moments and challenging times of grief and anxiety, His presence has been constant and good.
What began as an intuitive choice to use energetic blues and greens has revealed itself as a deeper representation - these colors embody the Holy Spirit's work in my life.
While my journey with the Lord has been profound, the technical aspects of creating this piece followed my tried-and-true process.
My Creative Process
Each painting follows a methodical journey:
- Create initial thumbnail sketches
- Design digital mockups in Canva to plan composition
- Develop color palettes
- Prepare canvas with gesso, base layer, and grid
- Layer fast-drying mediums
- Add slow-drying mediums
- Apply gold leaf accents
- Varnish (when appropriate)
- Sign the piece
- Attach hanging hardware
Note: I sometimes skip varnishing to preserve certain textural elements.
Now that we've explored the technical foundation, let me share where I currently stand in the process.
Current Progress
I'm adding flowing lines to the water, creating movement and guiding the viewer's eye through the composition.
With the main elements in place, I'm approaching the final phase of this meaningful project.
Final Steps
- Complete water details
- Reapply metal leaf elements
- Celebrate completion!
As I prepare to complete these final details, I can't help but feel profound gratitude and marvel at how good the Lord has been, looking back.
Reflections
As this year-long journey comes to a close, I'm overwhelmed with gratitude for all I've learned and experienced through God's guidance.
