Introduction
Over the past year, I've been on a journey of self-reflection and growth.
When I made the decision to take account of the areas in my life that meant the most to me and make changes, I began this project as a reflection of transformation.
I chose a butterfly as the focal point of this piece because what's more fitting as a symbol to reflect change?
Concept and Process
When I begin a project, I usually have steps that I go through, in order:
- Thumbnail concept sketch
- Digital mockup — I use Canva to explore different elements I want to include in my painting.
- Exploring colors — When I'm happy with the elements in my digital mockup, I explore different color palettes.
- Canvas prep — I apply gesso, paint the base layer, and draw my grid.
- Add fast-drying mediums.
- Add slow-drying mediums.
- Add gold leaf.
- Apply varnish if needed.
- Sign my name.
- Add hanging wire.
Note: When I use different mediums together, sometimes I won't use varnish because I don't want to mess with the texture of the painting.
Key Challenges and Solutions
The dreaded Creative Block!
I encountered three creative blocks while working on this piece. Each time, I was able to overcome it by putting down the brush and taking a step back.
I used this time to hunt for inspiration and read art books.
I can usually find what I’m looking for, and if an idea didn't pan out, I was back on the hunt for the next creative solution.
Current State
The painting is well on its way to being done. The way the different colors interact with each other reminds me of a group of close friends. There’s harmony and a sense of belonging there. . While the color palette is satisfying, I'm still refining the balance of the leaves and their connection to the background.
Finishing Touches
I'm in the final stages of refining the colors and textures.
I like to refer to a painting as a cake.
Because, yum.
The cake is the foundational steps of a painting, and the details are the icing.
She's just about ready to come out of the oven, and once she's cooled, I can put on the icing.
Estimated completion: January.
Final Thoughts
This year-long project has taught me patience, planning, and balance between mediums. It’s representation both artistic and personal growth.
